You will need to complete some forms, but if you and your ex partner can agree on all matters, you do not need a solicitor.

If you cannot agree on child care arrangements you will be offered mediation. If mediation is not suitable, or there is no agreement, you will need to attend a hearing at your local court. The court will only make an order if it considers that making the order would be better for the child than not making one.  More information can be found here.

If you are married, once all arrangements are decided, a decree nisi is pronounced, and the divorce can be finalised no less than six weeks later by a decree absolute.

What will it cost?

Divorce or legal separation can cost anything from a few pounds to over £100,000 in legal fees. Higher costs are associated with high levels of disagreement.

Court fees are explained in County Court Fees Leaflet EX50. You may not have to pay if you are in receipt of benefits or on a low income. The leaflet 'Court Fees – do I have to pay them?' EX160A is available from your local court.

If you employ a solicitor you will also incur legal fees.
