The family law process

Turning to the courts for help is best seen as an option when you have not been able to resolve disputes in other ways, eg by mediation,  or when other ways are not suitable, eg if there is domestic abuse.

However, the family court system has its own ways of making decisions, which are based on current law. What the law  says is important because it will affect how and what a judge decides. This section is based on the law in England and Wales, and gives you information to help make the best choices for you.

Disclaimer: Maypole seeks to offer women information and support, and raise awareness of issues which could arise before, during and after parental separation and divorce. Statements are supported by independent experiences and academic research. Full references will be available in our information leaflets, available later. However, we advise also seeking professional and independent legal advice before taking any action.
